University Library News, September 2009

Welcome to Fall 2009.  We are happy to report that it didn't take long for students to find us.
The University Library has quickly become a hub of activity.

LibGuides
If you use University Library subject pages to locate databases, reference books, and web sites for your discipline or topic (and who doesn't), you’ll notice that there has been a significant change in layout and appearance.

We have acquired a product called LibGuides that is specifically designed to manage and display library content. The LibGuides product is used by hundreds of colleges and universities to create and share library subject pages, special topic pages, and instruction materials.

You can locate subject pages from the drop-down menu here, as you have been accustomed to doing.  You can also view subject pages here.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue to update and refine our new pages. If you have suggestions or comments, you will find feedback forms on each page, and ratings for selected resources.  We are very excited to be using LibGuides, and welcome your feedback.

Library Instruction
If you would like to arrange a library instruction session for UCCA or any other course you are teaching, please email Harold Goss, the coordinator of library instruction: hgoss@samford.edu.

NetLibrary
You will find many new acquisitions located in NetLibrary, our electronic book resource.  NetLibrary materials can be searched from within NetLibrary by keyword, title, author and subject. NetLibrary materials will also be displayed in the library catalog, indicated by the term "electronic resource."   Click here to go to the login page for Netlibrary, and explore the many titles available to you there.

The Library and Amazon
You can help to support the University Library every time to make a purchase from Amazon.com or a number of other popular online retailers.  Click here to learn how.

Other Libraries
Samford library card-holders have borrowing privileges at a number of other Birmingham-area libraries.  A complete list of libraries with which Samford has cooperative borrowing privileges can be viewed here.

Perhaps the most important of these other libraries is UAB's Sterne Library.  Samford card-holders can check out up to ten books at a time for up to two weeks at a time.  When you present your Samford ID, a librarian at UAB will place a UAB barcode on it, and your books will be checked out to you.  You can click here to learn more about the Sterne library, as well as UAB's Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences.

Members of the Samford community who are interested or involved in studio arts will find an excellent selection of books in at the Birmingham Public Library's main branch.  You can search a catalog of the all the libraries in the Jefferson County Library Cooperative, of which Birmingham Public is a member, here.  If you would like assistance searching the JCLC catalog, please see a member of Samford's reference department.
